Stadium Series 2019: Wayne Simmonds' hit on Brian Dumoulin sparks heated scrum

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds caught Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin in the chin with a hit in the first period Saturday and Kris Letang wasn’t happy.

Simmonds went for a hit on the boards and caught Dumoulin solidly, if unintentionally.

Again, it appeared Simmonds was aiming for Dumoulin’s upper half, not his head, but the defenseman’s head shifted at the final moment which aided in the shot by Simmonds.

Soon after Simmonds’ hit, Letang came after the winger and several other players got involved as well. No fight truly began, but the altercation nearly led to one in a game between two teams that really don’t like each other.

Dumoulin left the ice as Simmonds was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. Letang also remained out. Neither returned to the game. The Penguins announced after the game Dumoulin has a concussion.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the first intermission, but there is plenty of time left in this year’s Stadium Series game.

It also remains to be seen what will happen with Simmonds as this may be his last game with the Flyers. He could be traded by Philadelphia before Monday’s deadline.
