The Wild went so far as to tell Coyle not to get on the plane to New York, where Minnesota plays Thursday.
Then minutes later, it was reported Coyle had been dealt to Boston by TSN. The Bruins announced the deal later in the day.
The deal is for forward Ryan Donato and a fifth-round pick.
Coyle has 10 goals and 18 assists in 60 games played for the Wild this season.
He scored a career-high 56 points for the Wild during the 2016-17 season.
The Wild currently sport a 27-27-6 record and have a one-point lead over the Avalanche, Coyotes, Blackhawks and Canucks for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
