Redskins QB Alex Smith suffers broken tibia, fibula, will undergo immediate surgery

Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula against the Texans Sunday and will undergo surgery right away, according to coach Jay Gruden.

The tibia, also known as the shinbone, can take four to six months to heal, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, although some can take longer.

Smith was hurt while being sacked in the third quarter.

Smith was replaced by Colt McCoy under center.

The Texans won, 23-21.
