NHL trade news: Rangers acquire Ryan Strome, ship Ryan Spooner to Oilers

The Ranger and Oilers swapped young forwards named Ryan on Friday as New York acquired 25-year-old Ryan Strome in exchange for a 26-year-old Ryan Spooner.

Strome, once a top-five pick of the Islanders, has one goal and one assist in 18 games this season. His underwhelming stats go back to last season when he had only 13 goals and 21 assists in his first, and only, full season with Edmonton.

Spooner heads to Edmonton going through a similarly bland season as Strome with only two points of his own (one goal, one assist).

Both teams hope a change of scenery can ignite both players.

The Rangers will retain $900,000 of Spooner’s $4.1 million contract to reduces his cap hit to $3.1 million — equal to Strome’s.
