The Bears are doing everything they can to make sure they are at the top of their game come Sunday when Chicago welcomes the Vikings.
The NFC North matchup between the division’s two top teams was flexed into primetime, and even though the hosting Bears are entering the contest off a 34-22 win over the Lions, there is still plenty for the team to improve on, including their special teams.
Kicker Cody Parkey missed both of his field goal attempts — one at 41 yards that hit the right upright and the other a 34 yarder on the ensuing play that also bounced off the same upright — and 2-of-4 extra points. So, Parkey will take some extra practice kicks at Solider Field on Wednesday.
“I guess just check all the boxes you can, right?,” Parkey said, via the Chicago Tribune. “I mean, it can’t hurt. Honestly, just check all my boxes, do everything I possibly can to make kicks. I do that every single week, and this is just adding a little extra something to that.”
Parkey, who is playing his first season in Chicago after spending time in Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, will likely make the 35-mile trip from the team’s practice facility to the downtown stadium Thursday, as well, the Tribune reported.
“We’re going to always do whatever we need to do to make things as good as possible for any player on this team, whatever that is,” coach Matt Nagy said. “If that’s catching extra passes after practice with the Jugs machine or him going down to Soldier Field and those guys practicing, we’ll do that. It’s important to try to make the element of the game as real as possible.”
Parkey is 13-of-18 this season and has made 53 of his 57 extra-point attempts. But, despite his prior success, his performance Sunday was the butt of some jokes, including a mention in Jimmy Fallon’s late night monologue.
“This is my fifth season doing this — I’ve had highs, I’ve had lows,” he said. “So, unfortunately, it comes with the territory sometimes. I don’t get down on myself, I know I’m a great kicker. I’m just going to go out there Sunday and try my best.”
