The Panthers faced a blowout loss to the Steelers on Thursday as they fell 52-21 behind a struggling defense, and quarterback Cam Newton had a simple explanation for what happened.
“We got whooped, man,” Newton said (via the team’s website).

The game got off to a strong start for the Panthers as they scored on the first drive, but it quickly went downhill from there. Newton completed 23-of-29 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns with one costly interception while being sacked a season-high five times.
Additionally, the Panthers couldn’t find a way to defend against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who went 22-of-25 passing for 328 yards, five touchdowns and didn’t have any interceptions.
“It was just a domino effect. We just got outplayed,” Newton said. “I’ve been playing in this league long enough to understand that you need to fight through games like this. You are going to have these types of games in the league, but it’s going to be about how we rebound.”
The loss ended the Panthers’ three-game winning streak, dropping Carolina to 6-3, but Newton is hopeful the team will learn from the outing.
“It was a learning experience for a lot of guys,” Newton said. “If we expect to be as good as we expect to be, we have to find ways to win games like this in hostile environments.”
The Panthers are next scheduled to face the Lions (3-5). Newton is confident Carolina will be ready in Week 11 as he said Thursday, “We’ll bounce back from this.”
